A2P 10DLC Background
A2P messaging (application to person messaging) is a type of SMS messaging technique where a text is sent from a software application run by an enterprise to a consumer's device. With A2P messaging, the line of communication is typically one-way, meaning the recipient is not always expected to respond.
A2P 10DLC (Application-to-Person 10-Digit Long Code) was designed as a messaging solution that enables businesses to send text messages from a local 10DLC number in the United States (US).
The US long codes widely used by businesses in previous years were originally designed for person-to-person (P2P) communications only. They have low volume throughput and lack necessary security standards resulting in many spam messages being sent to customers. Phone carriers consider them to be an unsanctioned route for business texts. For this reason, messages are often subject to blocking and throttling.
Who needs to register for A2P 10DLC?
Mobile carriers consider all SMS traffic from Lightico to be sent from an application, so anyone using a 10DLC number to send SMS messages to the US must register in order to ensure a high throughput and to avoid carrier filtering.
Registering (requirements for A2P 10DLC)
US carriers implemented A2P 10DLC, therefore businesses who use Lightico to communicate with their US based customers through text messaging must register their business information and use cases to avoid carrier filtering.
There are two steps to this process, the first is Brand Registration where action is required from customers, and the second is Campaign registration which will be handled by your Lightico Program Manager.
In order to initiate Brand Registration on behalf of Lightico customers, Lightico will collect the following information in the above linked registration form:
- Legal Company / Entity Name
- Type of Company (privately held, publicly traded, etc.)
- DBA (as applicable)
- EIN / TIN # (issued by the IRS)
- For publicly traded firms - the stock exchange and ticker symbol
- Legal Registered Address (must be associated with the EIN / TIN #)
- Website address for your company
- Additional contact information (both items required) - to verify the ‘brand’ registration - this needs to be associated with a contact(s) familiar with your relationship to Lightico:
- Email address
- Phone number
After your brand is verified by the Campaign Registry, Lightico will handle the required registration of customer specific SMS campaigns and use cases.
Campaigns include the use case(s) and the associated SMS messaging leveraged in your communications.
Final campaign registration approval is provided by Campaign Registry and Lightico cannot guarantee its success. In the event of a declined registration, the Lightico Program Manager will reach out to you to work together on next steps.
We’ve already registered with Twilio or Textel, why with Lightico?
Your Brand must be registered with any Lightico provided SMS numbers.
An alternative to this process is to provide your own Twilio number to be setup in your Lightico account. Going forward, this will be managed by your firm.
Lightico campaign registration is still required and can be executed independently if you are using your own Twilio or Textel integration within your Lightico account.
Interested in setting up your own Twilio number in your Lightico solution? Please contact your Lightico Program Manager or our Support Team for support. You can also read here on how to setup and configure a Third Party SMS provider.
